Indie Music

Like a fast growing teenager from a decayed family, the music industry has been distorted by painful and sudden changes, finally trying to survive in and of itself. Nowadays, major labels are the melancholious parents in negation, lacking the old days of sense of ownership. They are still in control, oppressing the market reformations as much as possible. But they are playing through, and they know it: capitalism in the hands of the little ones is a doomsday device against the corporations.
"Indie" is an abbreviation applied mostly for Independent music by the labels in the field of recording, production and publishing. Indie bands like "Sonic Youth" and "The Pixies" grew up to alternative audience when the music industry began to turn into a commercial monopoly, and the recently MP3 file sharing tendency re-ignited the war between power and talent. Since then, things have changed.
"Indie" is often applied for a music genre. These musicians are still independent in the real meaning of the word. Independent labels assisted this conversion, but today's market evolution also leaves them behind. The main reason is a fusion of musicians and business - artists producing in their own home studios more often or creating their own indie labels. Some major labels believe music industry, as a business, will become less profitable for top Billboard artists. Young bands would benefit from the accessibility to cheap home studio device and cheap publishing.
